It was originally part of a SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) implementation called Soup, but the SOAP and non-SOAP parts have now been split into separate packages. libsoup uses the Glib main loop and is designed to work well with GTK applications. This enables GNOME applications to access HTTP servers on the network in a completely asynchronous fashion, very similar to the Gtk+ programming model (a synchronous operation mode is also supported for those who want it).

It is the most complete library of its kind with the ability to connect an abstract callback to a class method, function, or function object. It contains adaptor classes for connection of dissimilar callbacks and has an ease of use unmatched by other C++ callback libraries. Package GTK-- (gtkmm), which is a C++ binding to the GTK+ library, starting with version 1.1.2, uses libsigc++20.

This works in conjunction with the user-land commands and libraries to enable tape emulation.
